River Cree Resort & Casino belongs to River Cree Enterprises Limited Partnership, the business entity of the Enoch Cree Nation, with the operating contract held by Sonco Gaming Co. and hotel management historically carried out by Marriott. The complex opened on October 26, 2006 at a cost of 178 million dollars and was the first aboriginal-owned casino in Alberta. Ownership became undivided in 2014, when proceeds from a private placement were used to buy out the minority interest held by Las Vegas-based Paragon Gaming.

The property sits on the Enoch Cree Nation reserve bordering Edmonton on the west, which places it partially outside provincial jurisdiction and gives it a different footing from the commercial casinos inside the city. Under one roof there are two gaming floors, a 249-room hotel, a concert hall, six restaurants, three lounges, meeting rooms and two NHL-sized ice rinks that host what is described as the largest adult hockey league in western Canada.

Capital spending has continued. A groundbreaking ceremony in September 2024 launched a 200-million-dollar expansion: an 18-storey tower with 230 additional hotel rooms, more than 30 luxury suites, a pool with two waterslides, and more than 40,000 square feet of event space. A further Embers addition of roughly 22,500 square feet was announced in October 2024, after Indigenous Services Canada issued a Notice of Determination for the project on June 11, 2024. A reported Top Golf site near the resort, mentioned by Enoch leaders, was later denied by that company.

Where it is and how to get there

The address is 300 East Lapotac Boulevard, Enoch, Alberta T7X 3Y3. Alberta Highway 60 runs north to south through the centre of the reserve, and the resort is reached by road in about 22 minutes from Edmonton, a distance of 12 miles. Drive time from Edmonton International Airport varies by source and traffic, falling roughly in the 20 to 30 minute band.

Transit is the weak link. There is no direct bus to the airport; routings run through West Edmonton Mall Transit Centre and Century Park Transit Centre and take between one hour 34 minutes and over two hours, at a fare of nine dollars. The nearest stop, Granville Drive and Greenough Bay, is a 14-minute walk from the property, though a direct bus from there reaches West Edmonton Mall Bay A in about 29 minutes, every 20 minutes daily. The resort also runs a complimentary shuttle to West Edmonton Mall every 30 minutes.

What is inside the complex

The main floor is entirely smoke-free and carries 1,665 slot machines, with 46 table games across the property. Embers, the smoke-friendly gaming centre created by a 25,000-square-foot expansion, holds 405 slot machines and 14 table games. The Poker Room runs cash games at 14 tables and uses the free Poker Atlas app to manage wait lists.

The Venue at River Cree is the entertainment side of the business, with 24,000 square feet of event space and a stated capacity of up to 2,400 people; the resort’s own event pages give a working range of 500 to 2,500 depending on configuration. Leisure facilities include an indoor pool, a hot tub, a 24-hour fitness centre and the two rinks, which are visible from the sports bar.

Search results for the brand are cluttered, since a cluster of unaffiliated sites trades on the River Cree name and one of them even places the property on the wrong river and under the wrong regulator; an independent overview of what operates as River Cree online separates those domains from the resort itself.

Hours and when to go

The casino floor and slot operation run 24 hours daily. Table games are open from 11:00 am to 3:00 am every day. The Poker Room follows a split schedule: 11:00 am to 3:00 am Monday through Wednesday, and 24 hours from Thursday to Sunday. The Ticketmaster box office, located at the Casino Players Club, is open seven days a week from 10:00 am to midnight and accepts debit or credit cards only.

Room pricing follows the demand curve of a hockey-and-concerts property rather than a summer resort. One booking aggregator’s twelve-month tracking put the cheapest month at October, averaging 217 Canadian dollars a night, and the most expensive at February, averaging 335 dollars; by day of week, Wednesday averaged 207 dollars against 429 dollars on Friday, with booking about seven weeks ahead cited as the cheaper window.

Where to eat and what it costs

Dining is casual to mid-range, without a confirmed fine-dining tier. The Kitchen Restaurant covers contemporary Canadian and steak, serving breakfast from 7:00 am on weekdays, weekend breakfast until 2:00 pm, lunch on weekdays and dinner from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm, with a buffet on Friday and Saturday evenings. Tap 25 is the sports bar, angled at big-screen coverage and platters; Fatburger handles cooked-to-order Alberta Angus burgers.

Quick service comes from Cha Xpress and Cree Subs, the latter selling sandwiches, hot dogs and taco bowls. ITALIA covers Italian, and The Lobby Coffee Bar pours Starbucks coffee beside a fireplace. Breakfast is not bundled into the standard room rate and is paid separately.

Loyalty runs through the Players Club, which grants 100 points on registration and converts every 2,000 points into one dollar of River Cree Bucks, usable for dining, gaming, spa services and retail. The Cruiser’s Club tier for players aged 50 and above adds double points on designated days, priority seating and separate event invitations.

Age limits, parking and house rules

Admission to the gaming floors and to The Venue is restricted to those aged 18 and over, and the entertainment programme carries no exceptions: all shows are 18-plus, no minors. Since July 2024, ITALIA, Cha Express, Fatburger and Tap 25 have been open to all ages, with minors accompanied by an adult, which softened the family restrictions on the dining side only.

Parking is free self-parking, with complimentary valet service offered to guests and patrons, and guests have noted working block-heater plug-ins in the lot during hard frost. The 249 rooms and suites, including 11 suites, are all non-smoking, with floor-to-ceiling windows, fridges, microwaves, coffee makers and flat-screen televisions that cast from Netflix.

Whether the trip is worth it

Strengths:

1) Everything runs on one site, so gaming, a 2,400-capacity concert hall, six dining rooms, a hotel and two NHL-sized rinks are reachable without moving a car.

2) The gaming split is unusually clear for the region, with a fully smoke-free main floor of 1,665 machines and a separate smoke-friendly Embers hall of 405 machines and 14 tables.

3) Access costs are low for drivers: free self-parking, complimentary valet and a free shuttle to West Edmonton Mall every 30 minutes.

Weaknesses:

1) Without a car the property is awkward to reach, since the nearest bus stop is a 14-minute walk and airport routings take from one hour 34 minutes upward with transfers.

2) The 18-plus rule on the casino floors and at every show narrows the property to adults, leaving families with only the restaurants that opened to all ages in July 2024.
